Manchester Piccadilly was our first commissioned layout and was designed to fit into a 12 ‘ x 11’6” spare bedroom. The client requested that adequate storage siding space be provided to accommodate his large collection of rolling stock. The layout was being built on three levels with the main station and TMD located on the middle level. The trackwork was based on the real Manchester Piccadilly with the through platforms located on a lift out section that gave access to the room. On the opposite side of the room was located Manchester Shortsight TMD. Under the main station area was located a large transverser that would have provided accommodation for complete rakes of trains. The upper level of the layout featured a branch line. The layout control was by DCC but all the point work was controlled from a custom made control panel that featured relay interlocking of all the signals. The biggest scenic feature on the layout was a section of Runcorn viaduct that spanned the window area of the room.
