There is one type of building that was unique to the WCML electrification project and no WCML layout should be without one. These are the relay rooms that were found at various locations along the lineside usually where the 25kv AC overhead supply was taken from the national grid. There were 12 of these ‘feeder stations’ on the original electrification scheme between London and Manchester/Liverpool. With the recent WCML upgrade many of these buildings have been replaced with lineside portacabins
