To service the fleet of new electric locomotives new depots were built. Some catered for diesel and electric loco’s but at Crewe a dedicated electric depot was provided. In contrast to the steam sheds they replaced, the new depots were clean and well lit. Modern gas fired heating systems were installed with scavenger fans fitted up under the roof that re-circulated the trapped warm air back down into the shed. To make working

on the loco’s easer most depots were equipped with pits and A set of lifting gear to enable removal of the bogies for maintenance.

Our Westcoast loco shed is based on the building at Crewe and can be adapted to accommodate 2, 3 or 4 tracks.
