As part of the WCML electrification scheme all the old semaphore signalling was replaced with four aspect colour lights. The 25kv overhead wiring installed caused the development of the WCML style of signalling structures. On double track sections an offset bracket arrangement was used to mount the signal head as seen below.

This design was so that the signal head could be seen more clearly without being

obscured by the OHLE

masts. Also note the mesh to protect the signal and signal engineers from the

25kv overhead wires.

On multiple tracks a different arrangement was used. Here the signals were suspended from large inverted L shaped structures. Access to the signal heads was by a ladder to reach the elevated walkway from where another ladder gave access to the enclosed platform where the signal was mounted.
